About the Grassmarket
The Grassmarket has always been the thriving centre of Edinburgh’s Old Town. From as early as the 15th century it was used as a livestock market and today it hosts a range of independent specialty shops, pubs and restaurants.
The south face of Edinburgh castle looms over the centre of the Grassmarket. Here you will find architectural styles dating from the 17th to 21st centuries along with a diversity of places to eat and drink. The central square is especially popular during the August festival season and offers great views of the castle.
Victoria Street joins the east end of the Grassmarket with the Royal Mile. The Bow bar is recommended as a traditional and unashamedly old-fashioned pub and Howies and the Grain Store offer excellent value wholesome Scottish cooking.
At the other end of the Grassmarket, West Port has a number of charming second hand bookshops and independent clothes shops. West Port leads through to Tollcross where there is a variety of typical high street stores including supermarkets, chemist and sports shops.
